PATAVEE VIRANUVAT

Filmmaker · Cultural Entrepreneur · Corporate Strategist · Social Infrastructure Developer

BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF DISCIPLINES

"The greatest possibilities often emerge when we begin to see connections between worlds that were never meant to exist separately."

Patavee Viranuvat's professional journey began with cinema, where the art of storytelling introduced him to the complexity of human experiences, cultural identities, and the environments in which people live.

Over the following two decades, his interests expanded into international business, corporate strategy, and social infrastructure development.

Today, through Alternative Universe and his executive responsibilities within World Group, he continues to explore how artistic imagination and strategic thinking can work together to create meaningful economic, cultural, and social opportunities.

His vision is rooted in a simple belief:

The future is not defined by the industries we belong to, but by the possibilities we create between them.

Bridging Cinema, Art, Culture, Business Strategy, and Social Infrastructure Development

Patavee Viranuvat is a Thai entrepreneur, filmmaker, cultural strategist, and business executive whose multidisciplinary career spans more than two decades across the creative industries, international business, and infrastructure development.

As Co-Founder and Managing Director of Alternative Universe Co., Ltd., he has developed an interdisciplinary approach that connects artistic expression, cultural exchange, corporate strategy, and long-term social development.

His professional journey began in cinema, where his early experiences shaped a lasting belief in the power of storytelling to connect individuals, communities, and cultures. Over time, that philosophy expanded beyond the screen into the broader fields of creative entrepreneurship, international partnerships, property development, and social infrastructure.

Educated in Australia, China, and Japan, Viranuvat combines a foundation in film and visual storytelling with postgraduate training in international management and corporate strategy.

His work has involved collaborations and engagements with international filmmakers, cultural institutions, film festivals, academic organizations, and private-sector enterprises across Asia and beyond.

From founding independent film platforms and supporting emerging filmmakers to developing corporate diversification strategies and large-scale business initiatives, his career reflects a consistent ambition: to create meaningful connections between people, ideas, industries, and places.

At the heart of his philosophy is the belief that sustainable development should be measured not only by economic growth, but also by its capacity to enrich human experience, encourage cultural exchange, and create lasting opportunities for future generations.

2005 — The Beginning: Film, Memory, and Visual Storytelling

Bachelor of Film & Television | Bond University, Australia

In 2005, Patavee Viranuvat graduated with a Bachelor of Film & Television from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Bond University, Australia.

His graduation film, shot on 16mm film, was a deeply personal exploration of memory, reconstructing his final memories with his father in Japan.

The project received a Dean's Award and achieved the highest academic mark in his graduating cohort.

The film laid the foundation for his artistic approach, in which personal memories, human relationships, and the passage of time became recurring sources of inspiration.

2006 — Recognition as an Emerging Thai Artist

Young Thai Artist Award | SCG Foundation

In 2006, Viranuvat received recognition through the Young Thai Artist Award, organized by the SCG Foundation.

His work was also selected as a finalist for the R.D. Pestonji Award at the 10th Thai Short Film & Video Festival.

These distinctions marked an important early chapter in his artistic career, establishing his presence within Thailand's emerging independent film community.

2008 — Entering the International Cinema Community

Asian Film Academy | Busan International Film Festival, South Korea

In 2008, Viranuvat was selected to represent Thailand at the Asian Film Academy (AFA), organized in conjunction with the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.

The program brought together emerging filmmakers from across Asia to collaborate on film production, exchange creative perspectives, and develop their cinematic language.

During the academy, he studied under the mentorship of internationally acclaimed filmmakers and cinematographers, including:

  • Hou Hsiao-hsien — Film Director

  • Arthur Wong — Cinematographer

  • Brillante Mendoza — Film Director

This experience marked a significant turning point in his relationship with the international film community and helped establish a lasting connection with Asian cinema.

Stratosphere | Produire au Sud

In the same year, his feature-length creative documentary project, Stratosphere, was selected for Produire au Sud, an international film development workshop associated with the Nantes film festival in France and presented in collaboration with the World Film Festival of Bangkok.

The documentary explored the journey of young people who abandon their conventional lives to begin anew in the forest, guided by their fascination with the influence of stars and the natural universe.

Through Stratosphere, Viranuvat further developed his interest in experimental narratives, human behavior, and the relationship between individuals and their environments.

2009–2010 — Education, Community, and Cultural Engagement

School for Life | Chiang Mai, Thailand

Viranuvat worked with School for Life in Chiang Mai, an educational community serving children from marginalized backgrounds.

As Head of the International Language Department and Guest Relations Manager, he helped facilitate cultural learning, international volunteer engagement, and artist residency activities.

This experience broadened his understanding of how education, cultural participation, and community-based initiatives could contribute to social development.

2010 — Establishing the Doi Saket International Film Festival

Co-Founder & Festival Director | DSIFF, Chiang Mai

Driven by a fundamental question—why do so many films disappear without ever finding an audience?—Viranuvat co-founded the Doi Saket International Film Festival (DSIFF) in 2010.

Working alongside key collaborators including Tossapol Boonsinsukh, Penwadee Noppaket Manont, Sasiwimon Wongjarin, and an international network of artists and cultural practitioners, he developed a festival model that challenged traditional approaches to film exhibition.

Rather than confining cinema to conventional theaters, DSIFF brought films directly into communities throughout Chiang Mai, removing economic and geographical barriers to cultural participation.

Festival highlights:

  • More than 150 films presented

  • Films representing 25 countries

  • 13 community screening locations across Chiang Mai

  • Eight days of programming

  • More than 2,000 participants

  • Free admission for local communities

The festival was developed with the support and collaboration of organizations including the Japan Foundation, Alliance Française, AUA, Electric Eel Films, and The Reading Room Bangkok, among others.

As Co-Founder and Festival Director, Viranuvat was responsible for the festival's strategic direction, programming framework, and innovative approach to community access.

DSIFF represented an early practical expression of a philosophy that would later become central to Alternative Universe: culture should not exist exclusively within institutions, but should become an accessible and meaningful part of everyday life.

2010 — International Artist Residency in Japan

JENESYS Artist Program | Japan Foundation | S-AIR, Sapporo

In 2010, Viranuvat was selected through the JENESYS initiative supported by the Japan Foundation and participated in an artist residency at S-AIR (Sapporo Artist in Residence), Japan.

During his residency in Hokkaido, he developed and directed the documentary Ofukuronikanpai, exploring personal and cultural relationships through the medium of film.

The project was subsequently presented in Sapporo and Tokyo.

This experience deepened his relationship with Japan's contemporary arts community and marked the beginning of a continuing engagement with cultural exchange between Thailand and Japan.

2010–2012 — International Film Production and Co-Production

I Carried You Home | Co-Producer

In 2010, Viranuvat was selected by Thailand's Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture, to participate in an advanced professional workshop for film and television producers.

During this period, he became involved as Co-Producer of I Carried You Home (Padang Besar), the debut feature film directed by Tongpong Chantarangkul.

He successfully presented the project at a Thai film pitching competition held at Alliance Française Bangkok.

The winning project subsequently gained opportunities to meet prospective international investors and co-production partners through industry activities associated with the Cannes Film Festival in 2010.

In 2012, I Carried You Home was officially selected for its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival.

The film went on to screen at numerous international film festivals and later received Suphannahong National Film Awards recognition for Best Cinematography and Best Actress.

The experience further strengthened Viranuvat's expertise in international film financing, project development, and cross-border production partnerships.

2011 — Collaboration with Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Exploding Cinema | Kick the Machine Films

Viranuvat worked with internationally acclaimed Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul through Kick the Machine Films, serving as Project Manager for Exploding Cinema.

The project was developed in collaboration with the Geneva University of Art and Design in Switzerland and involved an experimental filmmaking workshop in Chiang Mai.

He was also involved in organizing Private Realm of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a special screening and artist-talk initiative developed in collaboration with Chiang Mai University.

These collaborations expanded his experience in experimental cinema, creative education, and international institutional partnerships.

2013 — A Transition Toward International Business and Corporate Strategy

Peking University, China | International University of Japan

In 2013, Viranuvat expanded his academic and professional direction beyond filmmaking, pursuing further studies in international business and economics in China and Japan.

He received scholarship support to study economics at Peking University before continuing his postgraduate education at the International University of Japan (IUJ).

This academic transition reflected his growing interest in the economic structures, management systems, and strategic frameworks behind sustainable cultural and social development.

His thinking increasingly connected the creative industries with broader questions of corporate management, international cooperation, and infrastructure investment.

2015 — Master of E-Business Management, International University of Japan

Graduate School of International Management | IUJ

Viranuvat completed his master's degree in E-Business Management at the Graduate School of International Management, International University of Japan, in 2015.

His principal research direction was significantly influenced by the course Corporate Level Strategy, undertaken under the academic supervision of Professor Kimio Kase.

Professor Kase, a former collaborator of IESE Business School's Strategic Management Department, holds a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of Manchester and an MBA from IESE Business School. His academic background also includes studies at ICADE and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

The academic experience encouraged Viranuvat to explore the relationship between corporate-level strategy, business diversification, international partnerships, and long-term infrastructure development.

Japanese Government Scholarship Recognition

Viranuvat was selected and nominated for a prestigious scholarship opportunity under Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT / Monbukagakusho, 文部科学省), through a nomination associated with Professor Shinichi Kitaoka, former President of the International University of Japan.

The nomination was connected to his proposed initiatives in international social infrastructure development and the establishment of economic, social, artistic, and cultural exchange programs between Thailand and Japan.

These proposals built upon his continuing engagement with Japanese institutions and cultural organizations since 2010.

2015 — Founding Projectionist ASIA

Supporting the Future of Asian Cinema and Cultural Development

In 2015, Viranuvat founded Projectionist ASIA, an initiative dedicated to strengthening the creative ecosystem for emerging filmmakers, artists, and cultural practitioners across Asia.

The organization was conceived as a platform connecting cultural project development, international co-production, intellectual property management, and alternative financing.

Its areas of focus include:

  • International film co-production and financing

  • Intellectual property management

  • Film education and emerging talent development

  • Contemporary art and cultural projects

  • Cross-border partnerships and creative entrepreneurship

Projectionist ASIA subsequently became a central cultural initiative within Alternative Universe's multidisciplinary business framework.

Its underlying philosophy emphasizes that cultural development requires more than artistic talent alone: it also demands sustainable institutional structures, access to resources, and meaningful international collaboration.

2018 — Establishing Alternative Universe Co., Ltd.

Co-Founder & Managing Director | Bangkok, Thailand

In 2018, Viranuvat co-founded Alternative Universe Co., Ltd., with an initial registered capital of THB 5 million.

Headquartered on South Sathorn Road in Bangkok, the company was established with the ambition of developing a multidisciplinary corporate platform integrating creative industries, business strategy, property development, and social infrastructure.

Its first satellite space, Slure, was situated on Charoen Krung Road.

Designed by architect Win Rojanastien, Slure operated as an intimate alternative space reflecting the company's early commitment to experimentation across architecture, design, culture, and human interaction.

Alternative Universe was conceived not simply as a creative company, but as a long-term enterprise capable of developing projects and partnerships across Thailand and Asia.

Its strategic direction includes cultural infrastructure, contemporary design, creative business development, and initiatives intended to improve the relationship between communities, commercial environments, and the built landscape.

Present — Corporate Leadership, Strategic Expansion, and Infrastructure Development

World Group | Alternative Universe Group

Alongside his entrepreneurial and cultural activities, Viranuvat has developed an executive career within World Group, with responsibilities spanning corporate planning, business development, and strategic diversification.

His involvement with the group has expanded from earlier experience in international marine logistics and LPG trading into wider strategic responsibilities.

His areas of professional engagement include:

  • Corporate strategy and business diversification

  • Joint ventures and strategic partnerships

  • Corporate identity and brand positioning

  • Innovation and new product development

  • Property and mixed-use development

  • International business expansion

  • Social infrastructure and long-term investment planning

A major component of his current responsibilities is World Business Center by World Group, where he serves in project leadership and executive development roles.

The initiative represents a further evolution of his professional focus, connecting corporate strategy with the practical development of business environments, infrastructure, and future economic opportunities.

Across these fields, Viranuvat continues to work at the intersection of creative thinking and corporate development, guided by a long-term vision of building sustainable relationships between culture, business, and society.
